Every year at Christmas time, a special section of the hymn book gets opened again after staying closed all year. Many Christmas carols are well-loved and evoke special feelings during the Christmas season. But when did the tradition of singing Christmas carols actually start? This program details some of the fascinating history surrounding the singing of Christmas carols. It also tells the stories behind the writing of five particular carols: “Silent Night,” “What Child Is This?” “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” “Away in a Manger,” and “O Holy Night.” If desired, each of these carols can be sung during the program after the details of their history are presented.
