Young Benjamin Holmes, a slave in Charleston, secretly taught himself to read. When his master flees Charleston, Ben and other slaves are sent to the slave prison to be resold. Someone bribed a guard to bring in a newspaper, and late at night, Ben reads Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to his fellow slaves. A brief summary of the rest of Benjamin Holmes’ life follows the text.
