Turner Buckminster knows that the only thing worse than being the new kid is being the new kid and the minister’s son. It’s hard to make friends and have fun when the whole town is watching and judging him. But he escapes for a while when he meets Lizzie Bright Griffin, who lives on nearby Malaga Island in a settlement founded by former slaves. Lizzie, smart and tough, shows Turner how to hit a baseball, dig for clams along the shore, and row a boat – and opens his eyes tot he mystery and wonder of Maine’s rocky coast.
And then the two discover that the town elders want to evict the people on Lizzie’s island to make room for a lucrative tourist trade. Although Turner is forbidden to spend time with Lizzie, he joins her in trying to saver her community. But what can they do? Without power or authority, they are helpless against the rising tide of greed…
