We all know gratitude is important—it’s a message seen everywhere from coffee mugs to wall hangings to disposable napkins. But how often do we stop and truly think about how very blessed we are here in North America? By sharing world statistics about poverty, hunger, water shortages, education opportunities, war, and persecution, the listener is given many specific examples of the width and depth and breadth of our blessing. By looking at the stark reality of our undeserved privilege, the listener is challenged to push against entitlement and greed.
Then, by following the model of an ancient Jewish prayer called the Dayenu (It Would Have Been Enough), the script reflects on the ways God has gone above and beyond in His blessing of us. What is the correct response to such extravagant blessing? Certainly thanksgiving and gratitude should be at the top of the list.
This version of this script uses statistics specific to the United States of America.
